Marathon Taper

Monday, December 26th, 2005

Training for the Disney marathon is in its final stages. I had a great final long run last weekend. I did 24 miles and recovered well and have begun to taper down for the January 8th race.

In between long runs has been a regular weekly schedule of two masters swims, a short bike, and a brick workout. This triathlon geared marathon training plan has been very well balanced and I would definitely recommend it.

The current plan after the marathon is to take it easy for a couple of weeks before getting started on my formal IM training.

Rest Week

Saturday, December 10th, 2005

After doing 22 miles last Sunday during a snowstorm, thankfully, my marathon training plan called for a recovery week this week.

As I trudged through the miles last week, watching the accidents happen all around town from the slick coating of snow I tried to imagine my race next month. The Disney Marathon goes through all four parks and I'm sure it will be warmer than anything I have trained in over the past three months.

After taking Monday off I felt pretty good and have been taking part in some active recovery this week. I had a couple of good Master's swims and some relaxing runs on the treadmill. Today will consist of a 75 minute bike/run brick on the trainer and treadmill and 16 miles for my Sunday run.

The forecast is for sun and above freezing! Isn't it strange what we'll get used to?

I'm Back

It is a good thing that my training regimen does not mirror by blog updates!

Even though it's been almost a month since my last update my training has been steadily following my plan for a January 2006 marathon at Disney World.

My weekly routine has been pretty consistent with Master's swimming 2 hours per week, two short runs and a one hour bike during the week. The weekends are getting long with a 90 - 120 minute brick on Saturday and a long run on Sunday.

I did my first 20 miler of the year this past weekend and felt pretty good. I'm beginning to solidify my nutrition strategy which I'm hoping will improve my race day performance. My last two marathons have featured the traditional bonk at about mile 18-20.

This spring I switched over to using Hammer nutrition products and the results so far have been great. I finished 20 miles on Sunday feeling tired but with some energy to burn and a stomach that didn't feel like it was about to rebel.

This weekend I'll be doing a 2-hour brick (100 minute bike and 20 minute run) and then 22 miles on Sunday. It is expected to be a cold weekend in NH this weekend so the bike will be indoors as it has been for the past couple of weeks.
